23 Year old South African bass trombonist Siyasanga Charles has been chosen to join the prestigious Jeunesses Musicales Jazz World Orchestra.

Jeunesses Musicales Jazz World is respected as the leading international youth jazz orchestra, and selects talented musicians between 18 and 26 years old for the programmes that it runs. In 2014, 16 of the most talented young musicians will rehearse in Norway under the leadership of renowned jazz musician Erlend Skomsvoll ahead of a performance at the Kongsberg International Jazz Festival, 27 July – 4 August 2014.

Siyasanga Charles is a member of the SA National Youth Orchestra which has a proud 50 year history this year. This talented bass trombonist is a student of Jazz Performance at University of Cape Town, and is the only musician selected for the JM Jazz World Orchestra from the African continent this year. Johannesburg born Siyasanga grew up in Port Elizabeth where she attended Pearson High School until she was awarded a scholarship to attend Stellenberg High School in Durbanville, Cape Town. Siyasanga Charles has also been selected for a two year Masters in Music degree in Jazz Studies at Georgia State University in Atlanta starting in August 2014, and has also been awarded a National Arts Council bursary for post-graduate studies abroad towards this degree. Siyasanga’s parents are unable to offer her financial assistance and so she has supported herself for the past seven years and so these bursaries are critical to her development, over and above being well deserved.

Siyasanga is still in need of funding for her exchange to Norway and for her studies in Atlanta. If you are able to contribute please contact the South African National Youth Orchestra on team@sanyo.org.za or 0832722117. Direct deposits can be made with the reference “Siya” to the SA National Youth Orchestra account. Please send an e-mail so that the National Youth Orchestra know who to thank.
