Wits Theatre to host Kyle Shepherd at 969 Festival

A Highlight at this year’s 969 Festival: Kyle Shepherd

Until last year when Wits Theatre in association with JazzE brought Johannesburg jazz fans the Kyle Shepherd Trio, Joburgers had been starved of music from this talented young artist. Since then Kyle Shepherd has performed in Johannesburg a number of times, twice with Carlo Mombelli’s Stories Quartet. For those who have missed these performances, here is another opportunity to see Shepherd live in Johannesburg, and once again with his trio who are celebrating 5 years together.

Each year in July, the Wits Theatre put on a theatre festival that brings to Joburg, some of the best performances direct from the National Arts Festival. The 969 Festival this year has scooped some incredible shows from the National Arts Festival lineup including the internationally successful thriller The Three Little Pigs which has taken Grahamstown by storm year after year. Another stage highlight at the 2014 969 Festival is The God Complex directed by Sylvaine Strike and featuring Daniel Buckland.

The 969 Festival, called 969 because that is the distance between Johannesburg and Grahamstown where the National Arts Festival takes place, has selected works from many genres. Two of these works are from the music lineup, The Kyle Shepherd Trio and Fiddler in the Loop a performance by violinist Luca Ciarla who plays the fiddle and a few toy instruments, making use of a looping machine to create layered sounds to create a solo violin orchestra.

The 969 Festival includes dance works, children’s theatre, comedy, drama and music. The festival consists of 21 shows from 15-27 July at the Wits Theatre in Braamfontein.
