Wits Theatre and the Music Division launch their musical calendar with a concert comprising 4 talented musicians … two Swiss artists and two SA jazz musicians.

Dahinden, Kleeb, Mombelli and Lipere – Roland Dahinden (trombone and Swiss Alpine horn), Hildegard Kleeb (piano), Carlo Mombelli (fretless bass) and Thebe Lipere (percussion).

Roland Dahinden was the assistant of Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan University, Connecticut (1992 – 95), and has since worked on numerous projects and concerts, including 7 CD recordings. Hildegard Kleeb recorded the solo piano music of Braxton for a 4-CD-Edition on Hat Hut Recording – Basel.

Together, they have recently recorded the trio ‘Braxton-Dahinden-Kleeb’, a 4-CD-Edition for the label Braxton House – New York.

Other than Braxton, Roland Dahinden and Hildegard Kleeb have also worked with John Cage, who composed music specifically to be performed by Hildegard, who is known for producing the most incredible sound on the piano. Dahinden performed and recorded as part of the Quincy Jones big band with Miles Davis at the Montreux jazz Festival, and the duo has recorded extensively for the Hat Art label as well as for Leo records, especially the music of Morton Feldman and the aforementioned Braxton.

They will be joined by South African percussion guru Thebe Lipere, who has also worked with John Cage and was heavily involved in the free-music scene in Europe recording with Evan Parker, Courtney Pine, Bheki Mseleku, Louis Moholo, and was a member of the Django Bates Big Band – and finally we have the South African bassist, Carlo Mombelli, who has previously toured Europe with the duo and has also performed extensively in Europe with the likes of Lee Konitz, Egberto Gismonti and Charlie Mariano, and leads his own project called the Stories Ensemble.

With kind support from Pro Helvita arts council of Switzerland. Safe parking is available at the Planetarium; off Yale Road, Braamfontein.
