Twenty young pianists have been selected to participate in the 5th Unisa National Piano Competition from 11 July to 18 July in the ZK Matthews Great Hall on Unisa’s Muckleneuk Campus in Pretoria.
For the first time the competition will have a Jazz Category running parallel to the Classical Category.
Competitors in the Jazz Category are Marcel Dednam (23, Pretoria), Maryke Johnson (25, Pretoria), Ndumiso Ndlovu (26, Durban), Lungelo Ngcobo (22, Port Shepstone) and Kyle Shepherd (28, Cape Town).
Competitors in the Classical Category are André Breet (20, Krugersdorp), Peter Cartwright (26, Grahamstown), Willem de Beer (23, Pretoria), Lourens Fick (24, Paarl), Christo Greyling (23, Grahamstown), Nicholas Haralambous (21, Cape Town), Sulayman Human (22, Stellenbosch), Rosie Lemmer (16, Pretoria), Julien Lume (21, Pretoria), Misha Meyer (24, Pretoria), Megan-Geoffrey Prins (25, Riversdale), Caryn Reed (20, Pretoria), Richard Rheeder (25, Bloemfontein), Daniel Strahilevitz (26, Berlin) and Lezanti van Sittert (19, Pretoria).
The competition starts with Round 1 of the Classical Category on Saturday 11 July, followed by Round 1 of the Jazz Category on Sunday 12 July. Two separate juries will adjudicate the two categories.
The competition is sponsored by Unisa and the two first prizes are worth R60 000 each.
