Every Spring in Johannesburg, South Africa jazz fans come out of hibernation to experience the annual Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival. Once again in 2015 the festival will occur in September, a few weeks later than historically, in the festivals new home, the Sandton Convention Centre.
2014 saw the festival move from Newtown to Sandton, and a few weeks later in the year than was customary. Many agreed that the festival has a much stronger jazz focus in recent years, and the 2015 edition aligns itself with that view.
The line up sees some South African jazz heavyweights on stage this year with performances from Hugh Masekela, Nduduzo Makhathini, Jimmy Dludlu, Steve Dyer, Nono Nkoane, Estelle Kokot, Herbie Tsoaeli, Kevin Gibson. Other notable South African artists broadening the scope of music at this year’s Standard Bank Joy of Jazz will include Vusi Mahlasela, Oliver Mtukudzi, Wanda Baloyi and Simphiwe Dana.
The international artists on offer at the 2015 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz includes Marcus Miller, The Yellow Jackets, The 3 Cohens, Matthew Halsall, Dwight Trible, Dee Alexander, William Parker, Leena Conquest, Eri Yamamoto, Rob Brown, Lewis Barnes, Hamid Drake, Peabo Bryson, Sara Tavares, Manou Gallo, Mingas, Larry Carlton, Chico Freeman, Lee Oscar, Paolo Fresu, Trilok Gurtu and Omar Sosa.
A highlight at this year’s Joy Of Jazz is Estelle Kokot who returns to South Africa with offerings from her latest album, The Sound Of You. This new album comprises music composed by Jan Pulsford and Chico Freeman. Chico Freeman joins Estelle Kokot with leading South African musicians Kevin Gibson on drums and Herbie Tsoaeli on bass.
The 2015 Standard Bank Young Artist (Jazz), Nduduzo Makhathini has released three highly praised albums in the last 18 months and is expected to demonstrate exactly why he is the recipient of this prestigious award when he appears on the stages at the Sandton Convention Centre this September.
