Last week JazzE reported the news that Tumi Mogorosi’s Project Elo had won a Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. It has since been announced that Project Elo won a Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award.
The Standard Bank Ovation Awards were announced on the closing day of the festival. Convenor of the Awards Panel, Adrienne Sichel, described the work presented on the Fringe at this year’s Festival as “refreshingly diverse”. “I was impressed with the diversity, and aesthetics within the works.” Sichel also warned artists to keep their honesty and to beware of self-censorship.
Two Standard Bank Gold Ovation Awards were awarded in 2014. Wessel Pretorius’s production Undone in the Theatre genre was described as ‘breathtakingly inventive’. In the Music genre, Tumi Mogorosi was awarded a Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award for Project Elo. This 2014 South African Music Award (SAMA) nominated album made its festival debut in Grahamstown.
Silver Ovations were also awarded to Guy Buttery and Gareth Gale and Trio with a Twist.
The 40th National Arts Festival ran from Thursday 3 July 2014 to Sunday 13 July 2014.
