A former winner of the UNISA International Piano Competition, Spencer Myer, will show off his impeccable musicianship and artistry for JMS.
He will perform in Johannesburg on Saturday 21 March, at 20:00 on the stage of the Linder Auditorium, Parktown.
American Spencer Myer, who walked off with First Prize at the 2004 UNISA International Piano Competition, has also garnered the Gold Medal from the New Orleans International Piano Competition and is a laureate of the Busoni Competition, the Cleveland International and of the esteemed William Kapell Competition. He is also much sought-after as a vocal collaborator since winning the Marilyn Horne Foundation Competition.
Fast becoming one of the most important American pianists of his generation, Spencer Myer is a graduate of the famed Juilliard School of Music and plays extensively throughout America in solo recital, chamber music performances and as concerto soloist. He has been invited to numerous festivals in Europe as well as America, and he also plays regularly in duo with the award-winning cellist Adrian Daurov.
Spencer Myer will be playing a wide-ranging programme for the Johannesburg Musical Society on Saturday 21 March. His ability to play the music of various eras with unerring style and musicality will be showcased by three Scarlatti sonatas, Schumann’s passionate Fantasy in C Major and Ravel’s shimmering Sonatine. He will also pay tribute to the music of America by playing Samuel Barber’s Excursions, an exploration of jazz, blues and folk idiom, and will end his concert with three delightful rags by William Bolcom, including the stunning The Serpent’s Kiss. This last is a devilish tour de force. Apart from the digital dexterity and stamina it demands, this rag further taxes the performer’s skill by also including stamping, whistling and knocking on the wood of the piano.
Tickets can be booked at Computicket, or bought at the hall from one hour before the start of the concert. Please note, however, that no credit cards are accepted at the Linder’s box office. Students get substantial discounts.
