“Gonzo soul” singing sensation and medical doctor Luanga Choba will perform in the State Theatre Rendezvous, Pretoria, for one night only on April 17.
Raised by her grandmother in a family of 12 in a tiny Kimberley township, now Rustenburg based, by 15 Luanga had formed a four-girl group and made the semis of the Shell Road to Fame. But though her heart was in music, her head led her to study medicine and she qualified as a doctor.
Luanga practised in private hospitals in the UK and provincial ones in South Africa before giving in to her first love. She booked studio time and began recording her distinctive “gonzo soul” songs, then in 2012 quit medicine.
In June 2013 she launched her debut CD, Luanga Who?, on her own label, Xhimvwani Records & Publishing, telling O the Oprah magazine: “I finally feel whole and now I want to heal others with my music.” Luanga Who? bagged her two SATMA nominations in 2014.
With a second album now in the pipeline, Luanga has returned to medicine part time, for “the best of both worlds”.
Her State Theatre performance on 17 April is a prelude to the launch of a preliminary EP around June, and will see her sharing the stage with bass player and singer Aus Tebza and her all-woman band called Deeva.
