Jazz Semi-finalists Represent Three Cities

Three semi-finalists in the Jazz Category of the 5th Unisa National Piano Competition were announced on Tuesday 14 July.

They are Marcel Dednam (Pretoria), Lungelo Ngcobo (Durban) and Kyle Shepherd (Cape Town).

The semi-final round in the Jazz Category takes place on Thursday 16 July at 14:00 in the Z K Matthews Great Hall in Pretoria. Tickets cost R40 and are sold at the door.

During this demanding round each candidate must perform a solo programme of 45 to 55 minutes.

The panel of adjudicators includes of some of South Africa’s most respected pianists and jazz pedagogues: Karendra Devroop, Neil Gonsalves, Paul Hanmer, Roland Moses and Andre Petersen. They will choose two finalists who will each perform in a trio set-up during the final round on Saturday 18 July.

A Classical Category is running alongside the Jazz Category, with a separate panel of adjudicators. Two finalists in the Classical Category will perform a piano concerto with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, also on Saturday night 18 July, following the two jazz trios before interval.
