The Jazz in the Native Yards’ concert sessions which are generously supported by Concerts SA will start this Sunday 7 February with Bongani Sotshononda’s United Nations of Africa at Kwa Sec in Gugulethu from 4pm.
Sotshononda, a composer, arranger, accomplished percussionist and chromatic marimba player has travelled extensively sharing his skills with different audiences and his United Nations of Africa has been well received in South Africa and abroad.
Sotshononda’s United Nations of Africa- comprising of pianist Nelson Malela, drummer Nikolas Dlakavu, Jackson Kiria Kuti on saxophone and bassist Ricky Kleinsmith- has been featured twice at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2013 and 2014. Their repertoire is African jazz with a mixture of world music.
Some of the projects that Sotshononda has created include the indigenous orchestra which comprises an array of different African instruments from Africa. The Marimba extravaganza, with an 18 piece marimba ensemble, brass and percussion is another project that Sotshononda has been involved in. He and Professor Mike Campbell co-produced and wrote music for 50th Africa Day celebrations held at Artscape in May 2013. They are currently working on an album that is due for release this year.
