This year 2014 sees the National Arts Festival celebrating its 40th anniversary. As usual the National Arts Festival includes the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, in JazzE’s opinion, the only pure jazz festival in the South Africa. Today we publish the eigth in our series of 38 articles on the acts that you can see as part of this annual jazz festival.

Louis Mhlanga returns to Grahamstown for the 40th National Arts Festival

Renowned Zimbabwean born, South Africa based guitarist Louis Mhlanga will grace the Standard Bank Jazz & Blues Cafe at the 2014 National Arts Festival.
Louis Mhlanga, regarded by many as one of the best guitarists in Southern Africa, before leaving his Zimbabwean home ran the Zimbabwe Ethnomusicology Trust. Since moving to South Africa has performed in many collaborations, including with fellow Zimbabwean guitar legend Oliver Mtukudzi, Steve Dyer’s Mahube and numerous performances with South African guitar legend Vusi Mahlasela.

At this 40th National Arts Festival, he’ll be playing guitar alongside Sydney Mnisi on sax, Romy Brautseth on bass and Lloyd Martin on drums.
