This year 2014 sees the National Arts Festival celebrating its 40th anniversary. As usual the National Arts Festival includes the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, in JazzE’s opinion, the only pure jazz festival in the South Africa. Today we publish the twenty-first in our series of 38 articles on the acts that you can see as part of this annual jazz festival.

Think of Cape Town’s most well known ska-jazz bands, The Rudimentals and Golliwog, now take a bunch of musicians from one, throw them into the mix with a bunch of musicians from the other, put on your dancing shoes and what you’ll have is The Saturday Night Funk Party.
Saturday nights at the Standard Bank National Jazz Festival have become well known as the one night at the festival when the DSG Hall is transformed, with the chairs removed to make way for a dance floor.

This year’s Saturday Night Funk Party will feature Dan Shout and Justin Bellairs on sax, Lee Thomson on trumpet, Gorm Helfjord on guitar, Bokani Dyer on piano with Kesivan Naidoo on drums and Tlali Makhene on percussion. Throw MCs/Rappers Farrel Adams and Teboho Maidza in to complete this lineup.

See Saturday Night Funk Party at DSG Hall on 5 July 2014 at 22:00 – Tickets R65
