This year 2014 sees the National Arts Festival celebrating its 40th anniversary. As usual the National Arts Festival includes the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, in JazzE’s opinion, the only pure jazz festival in the South Africa. Today we publish the eighteenth in our series of 38 articles on the acts that you can see as part of this annual jazz festival.
Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival Artist Profile #18:
Bongani Sotshononda’s United Nations of Africa
The marimba, although similar in some ways to the more accepted vibraphone, has never really been common as a jazz instrument. Someone who is changing this is Bongani Sotshononda, considered the ‘Master of the Marimba’. Sotshononda is an internationally renowned composer, percussionist and marimba player who has had the privilege of playing with a number of music greats, including the Brubeck Brothers, Morris Goldberg, Willie Van Zyl Haubrich and Shannon Mowday. He also leads the ever popular Phambili Marimba and Brass Ensemble. Sotshononda uses the marimba to create a beautiful fusion of African jazz and world music.
AT the 2014 Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, Bongani Sotshononda will be joined by a number of musicians from South Africa (ZA), Mozambique (MZ) and Congo (CD): Sisonke Xonti – sax (ZA), Bhekumuzi Mkhuane – clarinet/sax (ZA), Nelson Malela – piano (CD), Sylvain Dalubeta – bass (CD) and Teshito Langa – drums (MZ)
