This year 2014 sees the National Arts Festival celebrating its 40th anniversary. As usual the National Arts Festival includes the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, in JazzE’s opinion, the only pure jazz festival in the South Africa. Today we publish the fifteenth in our series of 38 articles on the acts that you can see as part of this annual jazz festival.

Melanie Scholtz has released a new album that demonstrates her versatility as a vocal performer. The album called “Our Time” showcases Melanie’s ability to sing across genres from Motown to jazz. Melanie Scholtz is a former Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz winner and she will be joined on stage by a fellow Standard Bank Young Artist, Bokani Dyer on piano.

At the age of 17, Melanie Scholtz enrolled at the Opera School at the University of Cape Town, and graduated cum laude in 2001. A year later Scholtz was awarded “Best Jazz Vocalist” at the 2002 Old Mutual Jazz Encounters. Memorable moments in Melanie Scholtz’ career include appearing on Jimmy Dludlu‘s album “Afrocentric“, singing alongside Al Jarreau on “the Felicia Show” and singing the National Anthem in front of Nelson Mandela on TV for the Presidents Cup in George.

Melanie Scholtz has appeared at the Standard Bank National Jazz Festival both as a Standard Bank Young Artist, as a performer and as an educator.
