Jazz at the 40th National Arts Festival #11: Bertil Strandberg

This year 2014 sees the National Arts Festival celebrating its 40th anniversary. As usual the National Arts Festival includes the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, in JazzE’s opinion, the only pure jazz festival in the South Africa. Today we publish the eleventh in our series of 38 articles on the acts that you can see as part of this annual jazz festival.

Bertil Strandberg is the lead trombonist of the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra. This psychologist turned full-time musician took up his jazz career in the early 70’s working as a studio musician in Stockholm, and spent four years in the SDR radio big band in Stuttgart, Germany.

During the eighties Bertil Strandberg worked in the USA and for three years was lead trombonist and soloist with The Artie Shaw Orchestra. He was also a member of “Orange Then Blue” a Boston-based jazz orchestra under the direction of Gunter Shuller and George Schuller. During this time Strandberg also played with The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, The Four Tops, Lou Rawles and The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra.

This July in Grahamstown, Bertil Strandberg teams up with Buddy Wells on sax, Harmen Fraanje on piano, Hein van de Geyn on bass and Jeff Siegel on drums. This group will explore original works, bop and jazz standards.
