This year 2014 sees the National Arts Festival celebrating its 40th anniversary. As usual the National Arts Festival includes the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival, in JazzE’s opinion, the only pure jazz festival in the South Africa. Today we publish the tenth in our series of 38 articles on the acts that you can see as part of this annual jazz festival.

Greek saxophonist Dimos Dimitriadis took an interest in music and originally studied piano and guitar. He later moved to the USA where he earned his Bachelor of Music in Performance with honours at Berklee College of Music where he studied jazz saxophone, flute and composition. Dimitriadis went on to earn a Master of Arts in Music at Bennington College focusing on contemporary composition and the fusion of traditional Greek music with jazz improvisation. In 2007 he received a Fulbright Artist/Scholar grant to work as artist in residence at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York.
His musical talents have led him to playing in many genres including jazz, avant-rock as well as Greek traditional music. He also covers a historical jazz repertoire in his work with the Sonny Clark Project (with Keith Copeland and George Kontrafouris).

Dimitriadis is a founder of a unique Jazz and Improvisation Program at the Ionian University in Corfu as an Associate Professor of Saxophone and Head of Jazz Studies. He is the Artistic Director of the Summer Jazz Academy and the Ionian Jazz Concerts in Corfu.

At the 2014 National Youth Jazz Festival he will be performing with Sydney Mavundla (trumpet), Mageshen Naidoo (guitar), Shaun Johannes (bass) and Jonno Sweetman (drums).
