The State Theatre is proud to announce Hugh Masekela in Concert on December 19.
Hugh Masekela in Concert, presented by Masekela, former Deputy Executive Officer of the Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal (PACT), in the 1990’s, is part of the Mzansi Fela Festival currently running at The State Theatre.
The two-time Grammy-nominated artist and Brand Ambassador of Assupol (an authorized financial service provider), Masekela has just performed at a festival named after him, the Hugh Masekela Heritage Festival presented by Assupol in the heart of Soweto. The Hugh Masekela Festival aims to become an annual event moving forward, to celebrate Heritage month and to honour the people of Soweto.
In July 2014, he was among sixteen people awarded with honorary degrees by the University of New York. Every year, the University confers honorary degrees to people have made a significant contribution to society.
When he celebrated his 75th birthday in April with a Jazz at Lincoln Center Concert at Rose Theatre, New York, according to New York Times, ‘he recalled pivotal advice from Harry Belafonte who was also in the audience.’ Mr Belafonte had urged him to ‘put some stuff from his home into what he did’. Masekela had left the brutal apartheid South Africa in the 1960 to become a trumpeter in New York.
Together with Vusi Mahlasela, Masekela headlined the first concert in Carnegie Hall under Music and Arts of South Africa, the concert was entitled “Twenty Years of Freedom” a celebration and commemoration of twenty years of constitutional government following the downfall of the apartheid regime in 1994.
He has opened his own studio and record label, House of Masekela which has already put out its first release – Friends, a four CD collection of Jazz standards featuring his dear friend, pianist Larry Willis. Hugh is currently using his global reach to spread the word about heritage restoration in Africa, a topic that remains very close to his heart.
Hugh Masekela in Concert will be held at The State Theatre’s Opera Theatre on Friday, 19 December from 20:00. Tickets are available at Computicket at R80, R150, R180 and R200.
