The Concert Choir and Jazz Band from Elizabethtown College are comprised of students with varied backgrounds and majors including music therapy, music education, music, political science, religious studies, sociology-anthropology, communications, social work, and international business. Throughout the College’s history, the Concert Choir and Jazz Band have performed a wide repertoire both regionally and internationally. In 2013, the ensembles spent a week in Bahia, Brazil touring local schools, churches and philanthropic organizations and have spearheaded an instrument collection program to benefit Núcleos Estaduais de Orquestras Juvenis e Infantis da Bahia. During their 2011 tour to Ireland and Northern Ireland, the choir performed in St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Dublin), Christ Church Cathedral (Waterford), Galway Cathedral, and St. Jude’s Church (Belfast).

Our motto, Educate for Service, calls students at Elizabethtown College to serve the greater world. We tour internationally with the Concert Choir and Jazz Band to grant our students the opportunity to learn about other cultures and societies and to broaden their horizons. We share music of the US as well as music from throughout the world, learning works important to the peoples we visit. We hope to learn from the people of South Africa about South Africa. And we hope to develop meaningful and lasting relationships with those we encounter.

Music performed by the choir in the concert will include portions of Mozart’s Coronation Mass and several shorter works including several settings of US Civil War-era texts by American composers as well as works recognizing our own struggle for equality during the 1950s and ’60s as heard in African-American spirituals/gospel songs. The Jazz Band will round out the concert with big band jazz arrangements in various styles.
